Simple tips to improve memory

As we get older, memory care can become a more important part of our daily habits. There are several ways that seniors can work to improve memory care and even ward off cognitive disease.

Learn something new
One of the best ways to stimulate the brain and memory function is to learn something new. Continuing to stimulate the brain throughout all stages in life can help keep your mind in shape and reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. It’s never too late to start learning a new language or pick up a new skill.

Get enough sleep
The average adult should get around eight hours of sleep every night. Any less can leave a person feeling tired and irritable and can make it more difficult to concentrate and remember things. Recent studies have shown that getting less than six hours of sleep per night can actually increase the risk of developing several chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, anxiety and obesity.

Pay attention to senior nutrition
Believe it or not, what you eat can have a lot to do with your brain health. A diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables will not only help you maintain a healthy body weight, but it can make you feel more alert and be able to concentrate better. Additionally, regularly consuming food that is high in omega-3 fatty acids can aid in restoring memory and even help ward off Alzheimer’s disease.

Exercise
In addition to a healthy diet, memory can be improved by regular exercise. Aerobic exercise can increase blood flow throughout the body and brain, aiding with memory care. Some studies have shown that exercise like running, swimming or walking can improve memory more than any other comparable method. In addition, exercise can reduce stress and help you sleep better.

Meditate
Not all adults like to meditate or take time to relax. However, this practice can greatly reduce stress and alleviate tension. Reducing anxiety can increase blood flow to the brain and improve memory along with mood. One method of meditation involved visualization, when a person thinks about a situation and how it relates to other things. Visualization can help a person with their memory by recalling information faster through association. The simplest way to meditate is to take several long and deep breaths in order to calm down.
